The New Hot Thing: What You Need to Know about Clown Eyes Piercings
Social media creates trends at a lightning fast pace. With each craze, we have to acquaint ourselves with new terms and novel looks so that we’re not caught unaware if a client comes to our studios seeking a fresh piercing type.
The clown eyes piercing is the latest buzz. Popularised on TikTok, it’s a new name for a unique eyebrow piercing placement. Let’s talk about it.
What is a clown eyes piercing?
The clown eyes piercing is a vertical eyebrow piercing located at the center of the brow. It’s meant as a nod to the classic painted clown eyes look we all know and love. Decorated with curved barbells, it offers a distinctive aesthetic, especially with colourful gemstones and ball ends.

This is a new term, so if your clients come in requesting this piercing type, make sure that you’re on the same page. While “clown eyes” may refer to getting one or both eyebrows pierced, some people might ask for a “double clown eyes” if they want to pierce both eyebrows. Additionally, some sources refer to clown eyes as surface piercings above and below the eyes. Because of these terminology discrepancies, it’s essential that you discuss placement with your clients.
Why do people get clown eyes piercings?
You’ll have people come to your studio who will need guidance when it comes to their piercing choices; they’ll know that they want to get pierced, but they won’t know exactly what they want. In these cases, you should understand the motivation behind different piercing types so you can recommend them to the right people.

The clown eyes piercing is becoming popular for a few reasons.
- Eyebrow piercings, in general, draw attention to the eyes. A unique eyebrow piercing placement refuses to be ignored. Clients that have bold, beautiful eyes may enjoy a piercing style like clown eyes.
- Some people might want an eyebrow piercing, but they want something that stands out. The unique placement of the clown eyes piercing makes it a great option.
- It’s a brand new style, so it’s sure to earn some positive attention. Recommend it to clients who want something novel and interesting.
Clown eyes piercing risks and considerations
As with any piercing, clown eyes have some minor risks and considerations. They’re mostly avoidable with proper care, so ensure that your clients are prepared to take the aftercare process seriously.

Here are some of the most common clown piercing side effects:
Elevated risk of migration and rejection
Since eyebrow piercings are technically surface piercings, they carry a higher risk of migration and rejection. Migration refers to when the jewellery moves from its original position, and rejection is when the jewellery is fully pushed out of the body.
The signs for both are the same: red, flaky skin around the piercing site and/or jewellery that’s moved from its original position. Unfortunately, once rejection or migration begins, you must retire the piercing; there’s no saving it. It’s essential that piercees remove the jewellery as soon as possible to avoid permanent marks or scarring.
To avoid migration and rejection, your clients should move their piercing as little as possible, choose proper jewellery, and take care not to snag or tug at the jewellery during healing.
Piercing infection
As a whole, piercing infections aren’t as common as you’d think. However, they do happen, so they’re worth noting. Most of the time, piercing infections won’t occur as long as your clients clean their piercing daily and practice good hygiene. But, infections can arise even if they do everything correctly, so they should be aware of the signs.
Piercing infections are characterised by inflamed skin around the piercing site, green or yellow pus, a warm feeling near the piercing, tenderness, and swelling. These are usually severe and arise quickly. If your client fears they have an infection, they should visit a medical professional as soon as possible.
Other less common side effects
While piercing rejection and infection are the two most common side effects for eyebrow piercings, there are a few less common ones to be aware of.
- Piercing bumps: These are more common in cartilage piercings, but they can occur in eyebrow piercings, too. If a piercing bump forms, have your client come to you for analysis. There are a wide range of bumps, and it’s best if they come to a professional for help.
- Allergic reaction: Some people may have an allergic reaction to their jewellery. This can be prevented by wearing proper jewellery materials and avoiding nickel.
Clown eyes piercing jewellery
Because of the high risk of rejection, eyebrow piercings like clown eyes piercings can only wear curved barbells (aka eyebrow bananas) or various hoop styles like seamless rings or captive rings.

Fresh clown eyes piercing can only wear certain biocompatible materials. 316L surgical steel and ASTM F-136 titanium are the two most common choices due to their durability and friendliness to the purse. When helping your client choose between the two, bear in mind that surgical steel contains trace amounts of nickel that could irritate sensitive skin.
Precious metals like 14k or 18k gold can also be worn in fresh piercings. However, most people wait until their clown eyes piercings have fully healed until they invest in these gorgeous but more expensive material choices.
Fresh piercings should also only wear lightweight jewellery to avoid tugging against the piercing holes. This means opting for smaller ball ends until the piercing has fully healed.
Once healing is complete, piercees can enjoy a wider range of jewellery styles, including acrylic curved barbells, large gemstones, and more.
Healing and aftercare
The clown eyes piercing takes a minimum of 6 – 8 weeks. Healing times vary, so encourage your clients to come back so that you can confirm healing is complete before they stop aftercare practices.

Throughout the entire healing period, piercees must clean their clown eyes piercings 2 – 3 times every day. There are a few different ways they can do this:
- Spray the piercing directly with saline solution.
- Spray a clean paper towel with saline solution and dab the entry and exit points.
- Fill a small cup with saline solution and dip the piercing into the liquid. Hold for a few minutes. This method is useful to clean out the entire piercing tunnel.
Along with cleaning their piercings every day, there are a few other rules to follow:
- Avoid sleeping on the piercing.
- Do not touch or twist the jewellery as it heals.
- Keep away from hats or accessories that press against the jewellery.
- If you’ve struggled maintaining aftercare practices in the past, consider doing one piercing at a time.
- Watch for signs of migration or rejection. If it starts, you must retire the piercing as soon as possible to avoid scarring.
- When crusties form, dab them away with a paper towel dampened with purified water. Do not pick at them.
- Try to keep your eyebrows as still as possible, especially during the first few days after getting pierced.
- Avoid water activities like swimming, taking baths, or using hot tubs.
- After you shower, dry the piercing as soon as possible.
- Avoid all non-piercing products on or around the piercing. This includes soap, shampoo, makeup, and lotion.
Invite your clients to maintain open communication throughout the healing period and to visit your studio if they have any concerns. As long as they properly care for their piercings, they should enjoy a happy and healthy healing period.
