Ear Jewellery And Face Masks

Over the past few years face masks have become a normal part of our daily lives. Whether they stay or not, an important question that every professional piercer should be able to answer is: “Can I wear a mask with face piercings?”
Piercings on the nose, septum, lips, and ears are completely or partially covered by face masks. In addition, the masks are usually held in place by straps that are tied around the ears. This can lead to some irritations for ear piercing wearers with earlobe, helix, auricle, tragus and other ear jewellery.
Professional piercers should make it a habit to advise clients about suitable masks and any complications that may occur. Furthermore, ear piercing aftercare instructions and information on healing times when wearing masks should be shared with clients.
Choosing the Right Jewellery For New Ear Piercings
When getting a new ear piercing wearing a face mask can cause some discomfort and irritations with certain types of piercings. It can affect the healing process and as a result, increase the healing time. Tragus, auricle, or helix jewellery may not be the best choice for people wearing a mask, as there is a risk that their ear jewellery will constantly touch the face mask or mask straps. This can cause irritation, migration and, in the worst case, rejection. For this reason, it is advisable to get new ear piercings during a period in which you do not have to wear a mask every day as it enables the piercing to heal before it is additionally stressed by a mask.
Masks With the Right Straps
Most face masks are wrapped around the ears. By constantly removing or putting on the masks, there is a risk that the straps get caught on the ear jewellery. This can lead to irritation and migration during the healing process. However, there are several types of masks that are suitable for wearing ear piercing jewellery. We recommend masks that can be tied around the head and so-called ear protectors to take the pressure off the ears and prevent irritation. These are made of flexible plastic which adapts to the shape of the head, are adjustable and comfortable to wear. This keeps the ears and the body jewellery safe. It is also possible to use silicone face mask holders or hooks to protect the piercing.

Healing and Aftercare
Healing times are different per person and type of piercing and the aftercare protocols may vary slightly for each of them. Healing times indicate when it is deemed safe to change the initial piercing jewellery. However, since the healing process depends on aftercare practices, professional piercers need to provide detailed instructions to clients on how to care for their new piercings. Several factors such as jewellery materials, experience and ability of the piercer, genetic predispositions, and aftercare influence the duration. For helix, earlobe, auricle, or tragus piercings, the healing process usually takes between 6 – 24 weeks. In exceptional cases, ear cartilage piercings can take up to a year to heal completely.
As with all piercings, a strict aftercare regime is needed to ensure a smooth healing process. When it comes to nose, eyebrow, ear, or lip piercings, another essential factor that arises when wearing face masks needs to be considered. There are several ways to avoid the mask straps getting tangled and pulling on ear jewellery such as helix jewellery. Small plugs are often used to reduce the contact between ear piercings and mask straps to prevent irritating the ear. Other effective options are masks that adapt to ear piercings and accessories such as mask hooks and holders that reduce the pressure on the body jewellery. Wearers of long hair need to be extra careful and ensure that their hair won’t get caught between the ear jewellery and the mask.
Newly pierced ear jewellery should be cleaned with sea salt or saline solution, by carefully dabbing or spraying it. This way no bacteria can accumulate and cause an infection. Furthermore, it is important to choose the right hypoallergenic materials to avoid complications during the healing process. For initial piercing jewellery we recommended the materials 316L surgical steel, ASTM F-136 titanium (Ti6Al4V ELI), or 14 karat gold. Once the healing process is complete, you can buy ear jewellery that is made of other high quality materials.
